Hot printing

(continue)

In this second part, we will look at the types of surface and the techniques used in hot printing.

The various types of hot printing are distinguished by the use of the matrices and dollies, and in general by the processing conditions; these can be divided into three types:

  • Gold hot printing.
  • Dry relief printing.
  • Gold-relief hot printing.

The differences in the types of printing lie in whether a dolly is used, and in the different compositions of the graphic entities of the relief. In any case, for all types of hot printing, the materials used in the creation of the matrices is generally brass; the problems involving engraving and subsequent pressing operations at temperatures above 100°C using this material have already been mentioned. The relief die must be machined when the type of material to be printed, the type of press that will be used and other factors, some of which dictated by experience, are already known; all this allows us to believe that our technology, combined with the knowledge acquired over time by the master engravers that use our machines, is of significant help in the construction of the special matrices used in hot printing and in the standardisation of the procedures for performing the latter.

Special mention must be made, for the processing where this is required, of the construction of the dolly and the subsequent setting on the press: Cielle has designed and continues to trial resins suitable for the construction of this specific part, necessary, for example, in hot gold-relief printing, where the image transferred to the printing support (usually paper or cardboard with a basic weight less than 300g) needs to have a defined convex effect.

The major advantage offered by our company is the ability to supply a series of machines for engraving, considered the best in the industry by specialist technicians, as well as the knowledge and the specific technology for the construction of the matrices for all known types of hot printing; in practice, we sell the machine that suits the needs of the customer, and suggest the exact parameters for the construction of the product!! This makes the entire process simpler, and as a result, more economical. Just to give an example: to create a matrix for gold-relief with convex effect, we would suggest:

  • the material to be used (not all types of brass are equal!);
  • the procedure to follow for the construction of the matrix and the dolly, starting from the print preview up to commands to send to the pantograph;
  • the thickness of the matrix and the parameters to assign to the machine (progression speed, type of cutter, machining depth, etc);
  • we also provide you the possibility to follow all the phases in the construction of the matrix using our software package, that is, we accompany you from the start to the end of the process, without ever “abandoning” you!

This is the Cielle style, a style recognised by almost 20 years of experience. Try it to believe it!
